Style Vs. Design

Art & Media — tim @ 11:42 pm

Went diving in the web this evening to re-find an article I remembered reading a while ago about a web design problem that I’m experiencing right now. Haven’t found the article. Yet. Hope springs eternal.

But I did find something else — an excellent article by Adam Greenfield about the difference between style and design. I’ve been wondering where I fall in the continuum. To paraphrase Jules from Pulp Fiction, “But I’m tryin’, Ringo. I’m tryin’ real hard to be a desiger.”

Soldiers risking their lives will at least go out well served.

Dissatisfaction — tim @ 8:34 am

Was trying to put together a coherent lament on the first day of this idiotic war in Iraq, but got a little sidetracked while reading the U. S. Department of Defense’s DefendAmerica.mil. I suppose I should take some small amount of comfort knowing that, even though they will be fighting and dying for a dumb reason, the brave men of the 19th Armored Cavalry regiment will be well served. DefendAmerica.mil reports that they are installing wenches on their Hummers. [Screenshot]

Poor bastards. Sign up to be an army of one because you can’t afford college otherwise, get your ass shipped over to Kuwait, and then, just before battle, you get a wench and a hummer. I guess it beats the heck out of the pack of smokes you used to get in your MRE.

Waiting for the War

Dissatisfaction — tim @ 1:26 pm

It looks like we in the US are just hours from a bullshit war. Remind me again where the link between al-Quaida and the Iraqi government is? We’re gonna bomb the snot out of them because they might be able to supply weapons to terrorists?! Shit — I might be able to supply weapons to terrorists. You gonna bomb the snot out of me?

An whatever happened to our supposedly liberal media? Where’s the voice of dissent? I haven’t heard it on any of the commercial news outlets. Why do I have to go to the BBC to get any kind of objective reporting on the US march to war?

Blargh.

I’m pissed and depressed and feeling overlooked by my government. And Jonatha Brooke’s newly re-recorded song, “War” has been on major heavy rotation. She originally wrote it during the first Gulf War, but it’s even more appropriate now. And it’s available for free on her web site, jonathabrooke.com.

Musicians United to Win without War

Loyalty — tim @ 10:55 pm

As a counter to President Bush’s sabre-rattling speech this evening (which I did not hear, to be honest — I got all I needed to know from the BBC’s coverage), I give you my newest heroes: Musicians United to Win without War

SqArt Contemporary Realism show

Art & Media — tim @ 12:46 pm

I was at the previously mentioned show opening on Saturday. It was a mob scene. (Well… compared to other events I’ve attended there.)

Bottom line: the work is excellent.

I plan on returning soon to enjoy the show with a bit more elbow room. It’s up until May 31. Don’t let it get away un-seen.
