BBC publishes “Iraq Navigator”

Dissatisfaction — tim @ 4:44 pm

Want a really easy way to get a grip on Iraq as a place where people live and things happen instead of just as a concept we hear about (ad nauseum) on the Nightly News? try the BBC News Iraq navigator, a Flash application with a dead simple interface. Zoom in and out, scroll around and select which landmarks to label. Also includes a close-up map of Baghdad.

It’s a fantastic app. I wish MapQuest/Blast was this easy & quick.

Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom

Art & Media — tim @ 3:25 am

I just finished Cory Doctorow’s Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom. It’s quite good. And publishing it on the web for free is very Bitchun. Thanks, Cory!

P.S. Also finished China Mieville’s “The Scar.” Also quite good. I’m still fonder of his first one, though.

Roger Wood’s Klockwerks. Da!

3D pix from the Mars Global Surveyor

Art & Media — tim @ 9:51 am

Okay, everyone — get out your 3D specs!

Today we’ll be looking at some wicked-cool stereo anaglyph images (1,2,3,4) from the Mars Global Surveyor. Then, to continue the silliness, we’ll have a peak at “The Face on Mars” and the bullshit valentine that the aliens left us.

To be serious, though, it strikes me that this image and this one remind me very much of the work of a photographer back here on Earth. I’m currently blanking on his name, so I’ll have to find it and get back to you.

Reckless Administration May Reap Disastrous Consequences

Dissatisfaction — tim @ 12:22 pm

Happy Crap, Consumeristic Holiday.

Good news: this is not a rant about VD. This is a link to the kind of speach we aren’t hearing enough of from our governmental representatives. So here it is: these remarks were made to the U.S. Senate by Senator Robert C. Byrd (D, WV) on February 12, 2003. Can I get an “Amen, brother!” please?

And then, as if to confirm Senator Byrd’s comments, I look at the front page of Harrisburg’s Patriot News and see President Bush looking out at me, wearing a Navy flight jacket and trying to bully the U.N. into supporting his warmongering. The most ugly undertone? “Support my war with Iraq or become irrelevant.” Obviously not a direct quote, but the suggestion was clear. That man scares me. Can we please have a real leader now?!

Special thanks to Jennyfur for the heads-up on Senator Byrd.
