File under: ways to make money selling CDs that the majors just don’t understand.
Salon is running aninteresting article about a company that’s giving away CDs for free and they’re turning a profit while doing it. see, they’re charging $4.95 for shipping. Their actual shipping costs are about half that. They split the profit evenly with the artist.
How cool is that?
The artist’s cut works out to about $1.32 per unit. That’s _way_ more than an artist would ever see from one of the big conglomerates. About 300% more, in fact.
Seeing this makes me that much more dedicated to making sure our startup label (more on that soon) treats our artists fairly. It can be done. It must be done.
Scratch my sustainable itch.
A company has developed a super-cool natural gas production factory that runs on biomass. This kind of product makes me feel good about people. It runs on poop (a.k.a. biomass) — two cows will keep it percolating nicely. Yield: enough gas to cook for a family of 8 and keep a lantern lit into the evening hours.
Don’t miss the installation pictures.
It will likely sell for about $250(US) which puts it in reach of just about anyone.
This sort of thing is exactly why I get charged up about sustainable living. Go forward thinkers!

Dammit, Rob!
Dammit, Rob! Why do you keep calling me Leo? My name’s Tim and if you’re going to continue to write these ’scopes about me, I’d appreciate if you’d use my real name. End the charade. Just admit it: it’s me you’re writing about this month, isn’t it?
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): On an autumn night when I was 19 years old, I reached what I thought was the peak of accomplishment. My fledgling rock band had been selected to play for the homecoming dance at a high school in Gaffney, South Carolina. As I belted out our mix of original songs and covers of David Bowie and Grateful Dead tunes, I gazed down at the awkwardly dancing teens as if they were my worshipful subjects. Today, of course, this triumph seems laughable to me; my ambitions have evolved. I invoke this theme, Leo, because your own visions of success are now mutating. The dreams of glory that have fueled you for many moons will be quite different a month from now.
